Warmest Women's Winter Parka for a Canadian Winter: How to Choose

A Canadian winter asks more of a coat than a cold snap elsewhere: long waits at the bus stop, wind off the water, wet snow one day and dry cold the next. This guide explains what actually makes a women's winter parka warm, and how to choose between our two ELORA parkas: the 2566 Heavyweight Winter Parka and the 7609 Fleece-Lined Winter Parka.

What makes a winter parka warm?

  • Insulation you can feel. High-loft fill traps warm air. Both ELORA parkas use a vegan synthetic down alternative, made without feathers or animal down.
  • Fleece where you lose heat. Both parkas add soft fleece through the upper body and the hood, around the chest, neck and head.
  • Length. A coat that covers your hips keeps your core warmer when you're standing still. Both parkas are mid-length: about 90–100 cm (36–40 in) long, depending on size.
  • No gaps for wind. Look for inner cuffs with thumbholes, a hood that fits close, and a zipper with a cover. Both parkas have rib-knit inner cuffs with thumbholes and a heavy-duty two-way zipper.
  • A water-resistant shell. Wet snow soaks into an unprotected coat and makes it colder. Both shells are water-resistant for light rain and snow. They are not waterproof rainwear.

Choose the 2566 Heavyweight Parka if…

  • You spend a lot of time outside: walking the dog, waiting for transit, school pickup.
  • You want everything in your pockets instead of a bag. Seven pockets hold your phone, keys, wallet and gloves.
  • You want a snap placket over the zipper as an extra layer against the wind.

Choose the 7609 Fleece-Lined Parka if…

  • You move between the car, the office and the shops, and want a parka that is warm but easier to move in.
  • You want a brighter option. The 7609 comes in Red as well as Black, Navy and Hunter Green.
  • You prefer a simpler pocket layout.

How to get the right fit for winter layers

Measure your bust, waist and hips over light clothing and compare them with the size chart on the product page. Room for insulation and a sweater underneath is already built in, so you don't need to add extra. If you're between sizes, choose the larger size. Both parkas come in true plus sizes up to 3X.

Tips to stay warmer in a Canadian winter

  • Close the zipper fully and pull the hood up early, before the wind finds your neck.
  • Use the thumbholes. They stop cold air from running up your sleeves between your glove and cuff.
  • Open the two-way zipper from the bottom when you sit or drive, instead of opening the whole coat.
  • Remove the faux-fur trim before washing, and do not tumble dry. Follow the care instructions on the product page.
